RAYEE,
AKA NOW VOW TO TURN UP THE HEAT ON THE HEAVIES!!
Heavyweight
contender Raymond Ochieng’ and former African
champ Joseph Akhasamba have vowed to up
the ante in search for the much-sort national
heavyweight title. Champ “Teofilo” Sirengo
and challenger Tom Okusi “Black Rhino” meet
in a heavyweight title rematch of Timebomb’s
‘Total Redemption’ contest slated for Nyayo
National Stadium Gymnasium on August 5.
The
winner fights Raymond Ochieng’ (6-4-1/4
ko's) in a designated Timebomb
mandatory defense. Ochieng last fought in
March in Hamburg, Altona, Germany where
he suffered fifth round stoppage by Volodia
Lazebnik.
“I
have been cooling my heels in the gym with
no fights forthcoming. The time is now.
It will be first and furious. I believe
I am the most series heavie around and I’m
baying for their blood,” Ochieng said from
his Kibera Olympic training base where he
is shaping up under trainer Mohammed Ahmed.
Before
ageing Joseph Akhasamba deserted the local
scene on winning the WBB world title in
Dresden Germany in 2001, the heavyweight
title remained vacant until Sirengo beat
Okusi to the title in April. Akhasamba,
who became the first local world title holder,
held the national title since 1994 and relinquished
in early 2002. Akhasamba’s last title defense
was in November 2002 when he racked up a
majority points decision against Okusi.
Timebomb Promotions will promote the mandatory
defense billed as one of the hottest in
the recent times.
The
heavies fight is generating considerable
interest with former African champions Joseph
Akhasamba averring that ‘age is just nothing
but a number.’ Akhasamba told Promoter Atomic
Bunde that he is still in the race and willing
to challenge the winner.
“Mimi
nangojea mshindi. Sijawacha ndondi (I’m
waiting to challenge the winner of the mandatory
defense. I have not hung up my gloves as
yet).” Akhasmaba said.

CONJE COMEBACK!!
It’s
now official. The much-anticipated 8-round
‘Total Redemption’ female’s middleweight
showdown between Conjestina Achieng’ and
unbeaten Ugandan champ Florence Nalukwago
will now be staged at the Nyayo National
Stadium basketball gymnasium on August 5.
The
fight, initially scheduled for June 3, was
postponed indefinitely because it coincided
with activities in the run up to 2006 World
Cup in Germany.
Conjestina’s
is coming out of a four month lull since
losing an excruciating majority points decision
to American Yvonne Reiss for the WBC female
championship title.
Said
she: “A lot of water has passed under the
bridge since and you are bound to witness
a rejuvenated fighter this time round,”
Conjestina who is shaping up at Figure8
under Coach Joseph Odhiambo said.
She
steps back on to ring knowing full well
that another slipup could not only jeopardize
her future plans, but also exacerbate the
irritation of home fans since her defeat
to Reiss.
“I
am now ready for a true comeback and all
I can say is that the Ugandan has finally
met her waterloo. I can’t afford yet
another humiliation in front of home fans.
It was humiliating and painful last time,”
she said.
Also
in the card is the loquacious Zimbabwean
Monalisa Sibanda who is lined up to test
the might of Irene Ssemakula of Uganda in
a six rounder. Monalisa- who enlisted
for the Timebomb stable earlier in the year-
is still shaping up at her Harare base and
is expected to arrive in the country for
intensive training and acclimatization on
July 20.
The
Zimbabwean cause a major stir last February
when she dared the dreaded Conjestina and
stretched her all the way, contrary to all
expectations.
Another
exciting bout will be the national heavyweight
championship title rematch pitting Chris
Sirengo against his former amateur sparring
partner Thomas Okusi a.k.a. ‘Black Rhino’.
If the ongoing pre-match banter is anything
to go by, then there is no love lost between
the two heavies. Okusi says all is well
now and that he’s psyched to avenge the
defeat he attributed to an excruciating
hamstring that immobilized him before he
succumbed to a humiliating 2nd round Kayo.
There will be a total of seven bouts starting
at 1.00pm.
1.
Ladies middle: Conjestina Achieng’ vs Florence
Nalukwago (UG); 2. Ladies Middle: Monalisa
Sibanda (Zim) vs Irene Ssemakula (UG) 3.
Kenya National Heavyweight Title: Chris
“Teofilo” Sirengo vs Tom Okusi “Black Rnino” 4.

Nalukwago next in line for
Conje
After losing in her bid to capture the
WBC world title last month, Conjestina Achieng’ hopes to
restore some measure of pride when she slugs it out with
Uganda’s Florence Nalukwago on June 3. The 6-rounder will be a
non-title under-card for the Timebomb Promotions’ ‘Total
Redemption’ tournament to be staged at Nyayo National
Stadium’s Basketball Gymnasium.
Promoter, Atomic Bunde confirmed having
struck a deal with the star boxer. He said Conjestina will
after the fight leave for the T.E.A.M. Services Inc. stable in
New Jersey where she has been invited for a two-month training
stint.
“While still waiting for the final
documentation from the T.E.A.M. secretariat, we thought it was
wise to offer her a tune-up fight so that she can improve on
her record after her defeat by Yvonne Reiss. The experience
she grasped from the defeat has injected some experienced and
what we are bound to see is a different Conjestina,” Bunde
said.
Zimbabwean middleweight Monalisa
Sibanda was lined-up against Nalukwago but will now face Irene
Semakula of Uganda in a six rounder. Her defeat at the hands
of Reiss set her back quite a bit and now, almost a month
later, Conjestina has the opportunity to resurrect her
career. Conjestina who is shaping up at Pumwani’s ‘Pal Pal’
and Figure 8 Gyms under Julius Odhiambo says she is psyched
for a comeback in a big way.
“Losing to Reiss is not the end of
everything. We’ve seen serious boxers like Mike Tyson, Lennox
Lewis and Oscar De La Hoya humiliated but were able to remain
at the top. I still recall how Lewis was knocked-out by Hasim
Rahman in South Africa and he was able to avenge the loss with
a kayo six months later,” Conjestina said.
Congestina and Kampala-based Nalukwago,
72kg, have never met, but the Ugandan is already brimming with
confidence from her Kampala base, according to her trainer
Abbey Mugai.
Also in the card is a return match of
the national heavyweight title between Tom “Black Rhino” Okusi
and holder, Chris Sirengo. There has been no love lost between
the two pugilists but Okusi believes he has what it takes to
wrestle the national title from his former sparring partner.
Sirengo handed Okusi a first round kayo when both boxers
slugged-it out on December 3, but the latter attributed his
defeat to poor health.

The return of Monalisa
Sibanda
ZIMBABWEAN Monalisa Sibanda (4-1 (4Kos)
is at it again-but this time against a different opponent. The
diminutive but loquacious pugilist will not test the might of
Conjestina Achieng’ whom she candidly vowed to annihilate in a
rematch. She’s up against Uganda’s Florence Nalukwago
(2-0(2Kos) in a fight that will co-feature the Time Bomb
Promotions’ ‘Heavyweight Heat’ tournament at Nyayo National
Stadium on June 3.
The chatty Zimbabwean caused a major
stir at the same venue on February 4 when she lost by decision
to ‘the dreaded’ Conjestina in a non-title contest that gave
spectators full value for their money.Atomic Bunde of Timebomb
Promotions said plans are afoot for the Conjestina-Sibanda
match up.
“I really wanted her for a re-match.
But I am hoping that she’ll be on the ringside on the day of
the fight to see how water has passed under the bridge since.
In the meantime, I will go for a tune-up with the Ugandan and
this should be a prelude to my much-loved revenge with
Conjestina,” Sinanda said from her Harare
base.
Sibanda, now weighing 72Kgs, is
currently training vigorously ahead of her fight in Nairobi.
The boxer will link up with her Zambian trainer Seleleti
William from his Lusaka base during which they’ll proceed to
Nairobi for the fight.
The Timebomb fight card will be
headlined by a rematch between Tom “Black Rhino” Okusi against
heavyweight national champion, Chris Sirengo. Sirengo handed
Okusi a first round kayo when both boxers slugged-it out on
December 3. But Okusi blamed his defeat on poor health. “I had
pain killers which immobilized me and this is literally what
gave Sirengo the leeway. This time round I am as fit as a
fiddle. He’ll be in for a bashing,” Okusi
said.

INTERVIEW laila to conje:
PROVE YOUR Mettle against us locals first “I did have a teleconference chat
with Laila Ali and had very lengthy discussions on her
much-hyped fight with Conjestina. Laila did agree on all the
proposals we made. But she said Conjestina has to fight
somebody over here in the local channels so that she can meet
her.
In fact, if all goes well, her fight
with Conje is most likely to be in Nairobi promoted by
Timebomb Promotions in conjunction with T.E.A.M. services
Inc.
T.E.A.M. services inc. is willing to
have Conje fight and the condition they are giving is that she
has to be in America by April 20th so that she can sample
their new state-of-the-art training camp located in the
mountains of Sussex, New Jersey. The camp is one of the best
training camps in the world and I was amazed with what I saw
when I set foot into it.
It has high-tech boxing facilities and
Kenya’s Joshua Onyango is one of the first people to have the
privilege of joining the camp after being inked by Harold
'Shadow' Knight of New Jersey. This is a dream come true since
Achieng will enjoy the services of Harold the guy who trained
former world undisputed heavy weight champ Lennox Lewis for 17
yrs before he (Lewis) retired in 2004
T.E.A.M. services inc. is owned by Mr.
David Mastrogiovanni, a millionaire boxing hall of fame
inductee. He has a vast experience in professional boxing. He
has three similar camps in America- one in Las Vegas and the
other in Florida. Boxers will be training in different camps
to avoid harsh whether anywhere.
Also Timebomb promotions has been
appointed Africa agent for T.E.A.M/ services inc. This is just
good news for me. At least my dedication to the sport has bore
fruit in the long run. The chief trainer for T.E.A.M. services
Inc is Harold "Shadow" Knight and he will use his influence to
all the T.E.A.M. boxers to get TV fights in America.’
(Over here boxing depends on who you know 'he told me) so
Conje will be lucky to have their services. He told me we did
rush Achieng’ in giving her title fights
